Border security/Immigration Arizona’s new immigration law is a flawed solution to a very serious problem. Crime along the border and in our neighborhoods is still not being addressed. There are far better things we can do to solve this problem. - Our current legislators have consistently failed to deal with crime and violence associated with illegal immigration; but continue to cut public safety funding. - We need a comprehensive solution to border security and immigration. - We need more security along the border. - We need to crack down on the criminal cartels who deal in weapons and drugs. - We need to sanction employers who hire illegal immigrants. - We need to stop the human trafficking by coyotes. - And we need a tough, comprehensive solution at the national level. Sheri has worked for two terms in the Attorney General’s Office, where the Attorney General’s Office is making a difference: - AG Goddard has been cracking down on criminal cartels and smuggling rings. - Goddard’s historic settlements with Western Union in February helped cut off the pipeline of cash to the criminal cartels. Already, Goddard has secured $50 million in law enforcement funds from the settlement that could be used toward border security. What is needed has been ignored by our current legislators by repeatedly dismissing bills that will directly address crime and immigration issues in Arizona, Sheri will sponsor these bills and work to get them passed: - HB 2201 (misconduct involving weapons; fraudulent transactions): Gives authorities better tools to combat weapons trafficking and increase public safety by making it a felony to purchase weapons under false pretenses. Sponsor: Lujan - HB 2149 (drop houses; human smuggling): Combats the use of drop houses and human smuggling across the border. Sponsor: Sinema - HB 2354 (forgery; human smuggling; classification): Makes it a Class 3 felony if a person commits forgery in connection with purchase, lease or renting of a dwelling used as a drop house. Sponsor: Sinema - HB 2148 (human trafficking; violation): Provides law enforcement with more resources to prevent human smuggling in Arizona by clarifying and expanding the definition of trafficking. Sponsor: Sinema - HB 2151 (human trafficking coordinating council): Establishes a council to collect and organize data on human trafficking in Arizona in order to offer better, more effective solutions.
